Product Information

In its September 2000 issue, Sky & Telescope magazine proclaimed Baader solar filter film to be "the new standard in solar filters." For additional technical information about Baader filter film, click here, or view the Solar Filter section of our FAQ for a number of commonly asked questions relating to solar observations and filter sizes.

We offer Baader AstroSolar filter film in two densities, ND 5 (0.00001 transmission) for direct visual use and ND 3.8 (0.00016 transmission) for photography only. The film in available in many sizes at excellent prices. All pieces are square and are shipped flat between two stiff cardboard sheets, except full sheets which are shipped rolled in a sturdy tube. We typically also provide a 0.25" - 0.5" extra cutting margin on all sides of the sheet. All sheets are handled VERY carefully and checked individually before shipping. You must be satisfied, or we'll give you your money back. We've sold hundreds of pieces over the years and have not received even a single return!

Please note that you may notice streaks or slight bends on the Baader film you receive. This is perfectly normal and natural and does not imply that the filter film is defective or used. The optical and mechanical properties of the film are not compromised. We take great care while handling the film and will not sell you a piece we think isn't safe.

In addition to Baader solar filter film pieces, we also offer complete solar filters in various sizes. Instructions on making an inexpensive solar filter cell can be found in the following document (distributed by Baader Planetarium):

What is the difference between visual and photographic Baader film?

You can use visual Baader film for visual observations as well as for photography. The difference is that the photo film lets through 16x more light than the visual film does. So this means that your equivalent exposures will have to be 16x longer with visual than with photo film, but with the ample light of the Sun, that is usually not an issue.

The photo film listed on this page CANNOT be used for ANY visual work - not even briefly to focus the Sun through your camera. To use photo film, you will have to use additional ND (neutral density) filters to reduce the Sun's glare during focusing. You could also use your visual film for visual observations and for focusing, then switch to the photo filter for photography. On a video camera, you can use the photo filter directly if you use the LCD screen (and not the viewfinder) for framing/focusing.
